Players start by placing two settlements and two roads on the hexagonal island of Catan, which is divided into tiles producing resources: brick, lumber, wool, grain, and ore.

- Collect Resources – Use those resources to build roads, settlements, upgrade to cities, or buy development cards.
- Trade – Can't build what you need? Trade with other players or use the harbor to exchange goods.

- Beware the Robber, who can block resource production on a tile and steal from players — he's moved whenever someone rolls a 7 or plays a Knight card.
